In a recent survey by Mortenson it was found that 100% of healthcare professionals believe that the pandemic has sparked new ideas for construction of healthcare spaces. These findings have shown that prioritizing and investing in the needs for adaptability, flexibility, and telemedicine will see a large increase moving forward.

The Surge of Modular Construction in Healthcare

While the need for flexibility was recognized far before the pandemic, the capacity issues due to the surge of COVID-19 escalated this need. The pandemic revealed that healthcare spaces need to be constructed in a way that can be used for many purposes- and can be reassembled quickly. DIRTT spaces are built for change and ready to adapt as any organization evolves. Their focus on design for disassembly ensures components are interchangeable.

It is refreshing to see a new light of importance shed on the creation of enjoyable healthcare spaces. This human-centric focus can help patients and workers feel better in the spaces where they work and heal. Designers are making this a reality by featuring biophilic design components into spaces- images of landscapes, mimicking natural lighting, and by using materials that resemble wood. These natural elements help create a calmer and more pleasant environment for both patients and healthcare workers. Other designers are using clean lines and neutral palettes to create a more aesthetically pleasing experience for patients and providers.

Investing in a Modular Future

Mortenson's Health Trends survey asked executives what their next objective is. Nearly 40% are planning to increase investment in facilities over the next 18 months, with the largest planned investment being an upgrade to a conventional hospital (71%). According to the report, modular investments will be concentrated in hospitals (60%), ambulatory rooms or facilities (26%), telemedicine rooms (4%), and patient toilets (4%). The question is, how can we build flexibility and modularity into the construction and design of these facilities so they can adapt to future pandemics and epidemics, or really adapt to the changing needs of communities and the care they need?
